How should I wash my weighted blanket? I threw the directions away and can't afford to always take it to the dry cleaner. Can you wash it in the washer and if so what settings should I put them on?

Before washing your weighted blanket, you should consult the manufacturer’s care instructions, either on the tag or on the company’s website. Because of the heavier construction of weighted blankets, they cannot be washed as easily as regular blankets. Care instructions vary depending on the type of fill and the fabric material, so be sure to learn about how to care for your particular blanket before moving forward with cleaning.

The best way to wash your weighted blanket is to first consider its bulk. Blankets over 20 pounds should be taken to a laundromat and washed in a commercial-size machine simply to spare your home machine from wear and tear. If your blanket clocks in at under 15 to 20 pounds, wash it at home on the gentle cycle using cold water and a mild detergent. The video here could be of great help.

Moreover, you may own a blanket that is not suitable for machine washing. In that case, follow the oldest and the most sustainable method - hand washing. You need to know how to wash a weighted blanket by hand because the washing approach will be under your control.

It's essential to understand how to clean a weighted blanket if you possess one. Avoid putting your weighted blanket right into the washing machine.

A weighted blanket cannot be washed the same way as conventional blankets. It comes with more detailed care instructions and is comprised of a different material.

Follow these simple steps to clean your weighted blanket at home.

  • To avoid accidentally ruining your washer, weighted blanket, or dryer, be sure to carefully read the manufacturer's instructions before cleaning it.

  • Check the surface of the fabric on your weighted blanket to determine if there are any stains that need to be treated with a spot cleaner before cleaning it.

  • Choose your chosen washing detergent and put it on the laundry counter. Fill the machine with your prepared weighted blanket.

  • Activate the mild cycle to see your blanket become cleaned. If you are unable to fit your weighted blanket in the washing machine, it’s best to wash it by hand.

  • After you've washed your weighted blanket, you'll need to find out the best way to dry it so that it doesn't contain any water thereby further safeguarding the material.

  • Outdoor air drying is the best method for drying the majority of weighted blankets. Watch the weather to make sure the sun is shining brightly enough so that each layer dries completely.
