Why should I limit the time I spend on social media?

The recommended amount is 30 minutes a day but that's nearly impossible for a lot of people. Social media is where people get the news, talk to friends, and even do some of their jobs. It's been integrated into our lives and trying to "unplug" can be very difficult.

In order to cut down the hours you spend on social media you can set time restrictions on your phone so that it blocks you from certain apps. I've tried to turn off notifications from apps I use frequently but that only made me want to check them more in case I missed something important. I know others that keep their phones in a separate room kind of like an "out of sight out of mind" sort of thing.

You should decrease the time you spend on social media because studies have shown staying online for too long can be linked to depression and anxiety. Overall, it's not very good for your mental health. Think about it, it's not a natural function to wake up in the morning and the first thing you look at is your phone. Making an effort to find a balance between social media and your everyday life can make a big difference.

Studies indicate that you should only be spending 30 minutes to 2 hours per day on social media. Being on social media for extended periods of time may increase your risk of depression.

If you’re using social media to stay connected to friends and family or for entertainment it’s important to do everything in moderation. Personally, the 30 minutes a day recommendation is not realistic. Instead, try putting your phone away for a couple of hours or even a whole day if you’re able to for once a week.
