According to research the average active vocabulary of an adult English speaker can be as high as 20,000 words

So there is always room for a person to expand their vocabulary, but a word of caution, do not get too carried away and use obscure words no one else will understand. You just end up look insensate (foolish), rather than crackerjack (clever) and articulate!

Using a Thesaurus can help you expand your vocabulary by helping you understand that though words might have similar meaning, used in certain sentences they can have subtle meaning and impact, and express better what you are trying to say:

‘She entered the room, looking so pretty that everyone gasped’. The sentence can be transformed using a different word like ‘She entered the room, looking so stunning that everyone gasped’.

You can also make learning new words fun by playing Scrabble  or doing Crosswords  :)

Read often, write often, and speak often. Seeing and using the vocabulary words will help make them part of your daily vocabulary.

Various word games, like Scrabble and word searches, can help, too. You'll come across new terms, look them up in the dictionary, and then be able to incorporate them into conversations.

Word of the Day calendars can be a fun way to expand your vocabulary; you'll know 365 words just from this alone.  When you come across new words, use context clues and look them up in dictionaries. You can also look them up in a thesaurus; knowing the synonyms will teach you even more terms.

Mnemonic devices are useful, too. This learning technique is where people use things like music or acronyms to memorize something. If you consistently forget a word and its meaning, try creating a jingle for it.

This article goes into more detail and also lists some other methods.

There are many ways you can expand your vocabulary. Here are a few ideas:

Read a lot: Reading exposes you to a wide range of words and helps you learn their meanings in context.

Use a dictionary or thesaurus: When you come across a word you don't know, look it up and make a note of it. A thesaurus can also help you find synonyms for words you already know, which can help you expand your vocabulary.

Play word games: Word games, like crossword puzzles and Scrabble, can be a fun way to learn new words.

Write: Practice using new words you've learned in your own writing. This can help you remember their meanings and how to use them correctly.

Learn a foreign language: Learning a foreign language can help you expand your vocabulary in both that language and your own.

Use new words when speaking: When you learn a new word, try using it in conversation to help you remember it.

By incorporating these strategies into your daily routine, you can gradually increase your vocabulary over time.
