There are behavioral cues. They can be withdrawn or even fearful for seemingly no reason. On the other hand, they can be overly easy to please others – especially adults – and be overly fearful of making a mistake. They can also regress into throwing tantrums and wetting the bed. Becoming overly sexual or being afraid of being undressed, taking a bath, or being touched can be signs of assault.

There are also physical cues. When our minds and bodies go through trauma it cannot process it, it shows as unexplained sicknesses. This can include headaches, nausea, and rapid weight gain or loss.

Signs of harm, such as bruises or burns, that they constantly explain away or try to hide are important cues, too.

These signs – and many more – are included in the following article. The site also has information about how to report suspected cases of child abuse.

The WebMD article describes different types of abuse as well as signs to look out for. Signs of physical abuse include being afraid to be touched or afraid to go home. Signs of sexual abuse are suddenly avoiding a person for no known reason and not wanting to change clothes or take a shower. Signs of emotional abuse include depression, anxiety, and poor performance in school.

Signs of neglect include missing a lot of schools and always looking dirty and/or unfed. Signs of trafficking include having an older "boyfriend/girlfriend" and running away from home. Running away can be a sign of other abuse types, as well.

The site also discusses ways to report abuse. If you suspect a child is in danger, don't hesitate to reach out to the police and various hotlines available.
